God's Provision

Provision: the act of providing or supplying something.

When you think of provision, what do you see? Probably you see God supplying our financial or material needs. But I’m looking at the word differently. God knows we need all the material things (Matthew 6:25–34) — but seeing God’s provision as His hiding place, His shadow, His refuge, and His fortress is a completely different kind of provision. It’s spiritual. So I will talk about provision more from a spiritual standpoint than a material one.

The Almighty

Psalm 91 speaks to us about protection, safety, and deliverance. Did you know that שַׁדַּי (Shaddai) is rendered in English as “the Almighty,” highlighting the unlimited power, sufficiency, and sovereignty of God?

He is the provider and Almighty God who oversees everything. He provides a shelter of protection, His shadow to walk under, a safe haven, a stronghold, a hideaway, and a strong tower in which to abide. Invoking His name, we pray His angels guard our sons and daughters in all their ways — in the barracks, on the battlefield, in the morning, at night, and all around them at all times.

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

When I read that verse, it reminds me to pray that my sons are not fearful of anything that might come against them — weapons, psychological warfare, the enemy’s darkness, or the destruction that pervades the battlefield. Their trust and hope, I pray, is in God Almighty. Their focus, I pray, is on their Provider, Creator, Comforter, and Friend.

As well, I seek God’s provision over me and my thoughts — that I won’t be afraid of the enemy’s arrows at night or the all-pervading thoughts of dread of what might happen on the battlefield. Instead, I focus on God’s provision of refuge, hiding, protection, and a fortress of armor to be around my boys.
